Do You Have Sleep Apnea?

Do you snore loudly and often? Do you wake up frequently during the night? Are you very sleepy during the day? Then it may be time to find out if you have sleep apnea and get treatment if necessary.

Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous disorder that prevents oxygen from moving properly between the lungs and the brain. The airway completely closes and breathing momentarily stops. Sleep apnea is common among people with type 2 diabetes, and can be a precursor for the disease.

The key symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea are:

Loud, disruptive snoring
Gasping or choking during sleep
Excessive daytime sleepiness
Recurrent nocturnal awakening
Morning headaches
Restless sleep
Daytime fatigue
Depression and mood changes
Impaired thinking or poor memory

Depending on the severity of the case, treatment may consist of lifestyle changes, surgery, or wearing a CPAP device. CPAP, which stands for "continuous positive airway pressure" is the most popular treatment for moderate to severe cases. Most models consist of a molded plastic mask worn over the nose. A flexible hose leads to an air pump that supplies a steady stream of pressurized air into the airway, keeping it open. CPAP devices are reported to be highly effective in many cases.

BLT Pizza Wedges Photo Diabetic Recipe

Orange-Glazed Chicken

Start with a reduced-sugar marmalade for a simple, sweet-tasting glaze that’s delicious on both chicken and pork. To complete the meal, just add rice pilaf and grilled asparagus.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Grilling Time:
12-15 minutes
Yield:
2 servings

What you need.

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (8 to 12 ounces total)
  • Nonstick cooking spray

GLAZE

  • 3 tablespoons reduced-sugar orange marmalade
  • 1 teaspoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped green onion
  • 1 small clove garlic, crushed (1/4 teaspoon)
  • 1⁄8 teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)
  1. Preheat gas grill to medium for direct grilling. Rinse chicken and pat dry with paper towels; set aside.
  2. For glaze, stir together glaze ingredients in small bowl.
  3. Lightly coat chicken with nonstick spray. Grill chicken, uncovered, for 6 minutes. Thurn chicken over; spoon and spread glaze on top. Grill for 6 to 9 minutes more or until chicken is tender and no longer pink.
